Q: What inspired you to become a MHFA Instructor and how long have you been delivering the courses?
I’ve been teaching MHFA since February 2019. I could see the demand for this valuable course in the corporate space, where are organisations are recognizing the imperative to look after their teams.
Q: Why do you think Mental Health First Aid training is so important for financial professionals?
Financial duress is the biggest cause of stress. Many people suffering will turn to their Accountant for advice. The course offers the skills and confidence to know what to do and say when a client is suffering.
Q: What makes you so passionate about your work as an MHFA Instructor for the Counting on U Program with Mentally Well Workplaces?
With the wonders of the internet, the ability to bring people together nationally to offer this training at a time that suits. Online delivery is especially helpful to reach financial professionals in remove areas.
Q: What are 3 things you like to focus on and do exceptionally well when delivering Mental Health First Aid courses?
- Establishing a safe space, where people feel comfortable with the sometimes difficult content.
- Provide real-life examples that help people relate to, and therefore remember the content.
- Provide a forum to address participants’ questions or concerns.
Q:What are your own self-care practices for staying mentally well?
Yoga, hiking, cycling, kayaking, spending time with loved ones and in nature, gardening, painting, organising fun weekends away.
Q: Why would you recommend finance professionals, small business owners and employees in general become accredited Mental Health First Aiders?
The course is helpful to reduce stigma and improve awareness around mental health. Often times when people don’t know what to say, they don’t say anything. Having the skills and confidence to intervene, can help someone get back on track and may even save a life.
