Q: What inspired you to become a MHFA Instructor and how long have you been delivering the courses?
In 2013 I lost an employee to suicide and had no idea how to deal with it myself and how to support his new wife, family and staff. This lived experience has driven me to educate myself about mental health and the link between physical well-being and our mind . I also wanted to be able to reach out to friends, family and colleagues with confidence and competence offering help if they experience mental health and well-being issues. This education included becoming a mental health first aid instructor in 2017 and so far, I have delivered over 30 courses to individuals within the community and businesses nationwide.
Q: Why do you think Mental Health First Aid training is so important for financial professionals?
Financial professionals deal with their clients on a regular basis and need to discuss intimate details about their financial position and have knowledge if they may be in financial difficulty. By undertaking mental health first aid training this will build up their confidence and mental health literacy to look out for the signs and symptoms that their clients may be showing and be able to provide early intervention in getting help for people who may be struggling with their mental health due to those financial difficulties.
Q: What makes you so passionate about your work as an MHFA Instructor for the Counting on U Program with Mentally Well Workplaces?
I am excited to be working on this project as workplaces are a great first step to be able to help someone who may be struggling with their mental ill health. This programme not only offers mental health first aid training but also relationship building and a holistic approach to self-care and looking out for their team and clients.
Q: What are 3 things you like to focus on and do exceptionally well when delivering Mental Health First Aid courses?
- The first one is to create a safe space so that participants feel they are able to share their experiences confidentially without any judgement.
- The second is too be proactive and preventative in my approach to mental health.
- And the third is self-awareness and to make sure people practise self-care with the saying how can you look after those you love and care for unless you look after yourself.
Q:What are your own self-care practices for staying mentally well?
I have two “not negotiables” as I call them in life; one is to have breakfast every single day because like a car you can’t run without any fuel and secondly is to do some form of exercise every second day that helps with both my physical and mental fitness.
Q: Why would you recommend finance professionals, small business owners and employees in general become accredited Mental Health First Aiders?
This course provides both best practise evidence based, and practical lived experience education delivered in a practical and common sense approach aimed to build up people’s confidence and competence to help people who might be struggling.
